To unravel this mystery, Sonic must travel back to the start of time itself to recapture the lost land of Lemuria and search for the elusive Time Stones. With the help of his new ally, Miles "Tails" Prower, Sonic must work together with his friends in the three worlds they have visited before to fix the time line and prevent it from collapsing into an even bigger disaster. The game was first announced as part of Sega's showcase at the E3 1994, a few days before the release of Sonic the Hedgehog in Japan. It was later announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 2.5 will feature some characters from the Sonic comic book, including Tails, the doctor Dr. Eggman, the evil computer Sonic's rival Doctor Robotnik, and more. The story follows Sonic and his friends as they travel through the four worlds they have been to before in order to retrieve the lost Lemurian power. This starts with Sonic arriving in the past of the world of Mobotropolis, where they must stop the evil robot Sonic's rival Dr. Robotnik from activating the Robotnik Dam's power to become the new world's dominant power. They then travel to the world of Gondoa, where they must use a portal to Lemuria to regain control of the planet and stop Eggman from creating a new time hole and destroying all of time. Sonic and company then have to travel to the homeworld of Mobotropolis, where they are told by Super Sonic that it was destroyed, forcing them to find a way to repair the timeline and get back to the future.
